Joshua Tree has been on my bucket list for years—and let me just say, it lived up to every bit of the hype. This place is like another planet (at least for this Alabama girl)! The desert terrain, the massive rock formations, the giant clusters of cactus, and of course… the iconic Joshua Trees—I was obsessed. It’s so different from anything I’m used to, and I absolutely loved it.
One thing that surprised me? Just how big Joshua Tree National Park actually is. The park covers nearly 800,000 acres—it’s huge. You could easily spend days exploring and still not see it all. But since we only had a short window, we opted to do three easy hikes that gave us a great overview of what the park has to offer.
Here’s a quick recap of each trail we did (plus some tips if you’re planning a trip of your own!):
📍 Distance: 3.1 miles round trip
🟢 Rated: Easy
❤️ My favorite hike of the day!
We kicked things off with the Arch Rock and Heart Rock Loop—and I’m so glad we started here because this one ended up being my favorite. The rock formations were just incredible. Heart Rock was such a fun little surprise, and Arch Rock did not disappoint either.
The best part? After you pass the main landmarks, the trail becomes a little less defined. I actually loved that part. It felt like we were scrambling and exploring rather than just walking a paved trail. We had to pay attention to the map on AllTrails and do a little problem-solving, which made it feel more adventurous. It’s still considered an easy hike, but it had just enough variety to keep it interesting.
Also—pretty sure my kids would have loved this one. Definitely a good family-friendly hike in Joshua Tree.
📍 Distance: 1.7 miles round trip

💬 Good trail, but not quite as exciting
Skull Rock was neat—don’t get me wrong—but you see the “skull” right at the start of the trail. And if you’re like me, you enjoy having something to hike to rather than see the highlight right away. Still, it was a solid loop, and I appreciated that there were bathrooms nearby.
Some of the trail winds along the roadside, which wasn’t my favorite. I prefer trails that feel a little more tucked into nature. But overall, this was a fun and easy loop worth checking out, especially if you’re short on time.
📍 Distance: 1.1 miles round trip

😅 Not my favorite, but still worth doing once
We wrapped up with Barker Dam—and if I’m being honest, I think I was just tired by this point. It’s a very manageable loop, but nothing really stood out to me about the dam itself. I was hoping for a bit more of a wow factor.
That said, this trail had tons of Joshua Trees, and that alone made it worthwhile. There’s something so quirky and fun about those trees—I couldn’t stop taking pictures of them.
If it’s on your list—go. You won’t regret it.
