Rainy wedding days sometimes get a bad reputation, but Ashlyn and Dakota’s Bragg Mitchell Mansion wedding proved just how magical they can be. Despite showers throughout the day, every moment was filled with joy, beauty, and intentional details. With the right planning (and the right team), rain can add a unique kind of romance to your day.
One of the best things about choosing the Bragg Mitchell Mansion in Mobile, Alabama is its gorgeous wraparound porch. Even while the rain fell, we had the perfect space to capture portraits in beautiful, soft natural light. The white columns, greenery, and timeless architecture meant the rain never stopped us from getting stunning images.
Here are a few takeaways from Ashlyn & Dakota’s wedding that can help every bride feel confident, rain or shine:
1. Use Covered Spaces for Portraits
Porches, verandas, or even indoor rooms with large windows provide natural light and shelter. At the Bragg, the porch became our go-to spot.
2. Bring Clear Umbrellas
Not only do they keep you dry, but they photograph beautifully. They add a whimsical touch without blocking your face or dress.
3. Keep Towels or Paper Towels Handy
Wet floors can be slippery, especially with long gowns and heels. The planners had paper towels ready to keep the porch floor safe and dry.
4. Always Have a Plan B
Outdoor ceremonies are beautiful, but rain happens. For this wedding, the team seamlessly transitioned to a tent ceremony. It kept guests dry while still feeling elegant and romantic.
5. Trust Your Team (and Hire a Planner!)
The biggest reason this day was stress-free was because of an incredible planning team. Sherry and her crew from Studio08 handled every detail with grace, which meant the couple never had to worry about a thing. Having a wedding planner makes all the difference when the forecast changes.
6. Remember: Rain Rarely Lasts All Day
Most rainy days aren’t a total downpour from start to finish. While it rained most of the day leading up to the ceremony, the skies cleared afterward, and we were able to capture portraits in the fields with the most beautiful golden light. So don’t stress—your day can still have gorgeous variety.
Some of Ashlyn and Dakota’s portraits in the rain are actually my favorites from the whole day. The soft light, the romance of an umbrella, and the way they leaned into the moment made for timeless, joy-filled images. Rain has a way of slowing things down and making couples really soak in their day—and that’s exactly what happened here.
If you’re planning a wedding, don’t fear the rain. With a solid Plan B, a porch or tent option, and a planner who knows how to pivot, your day can be every bit as magical. Ashlyn and Dakota’s Bragg Mitchell wedding is proof that sometimes the unexpected turns out even better than you imagined.
